What are the projects like? I can give you an answer based on the particular type of projects.

Ugh, I have the same problem sometimes. I know I should be doing my research, but It takes me ages to get going sometimes. I love my subject, but sometimes doing nothing is far more appealing. Everyone has this problem to some degree, but getting over it is easier said than done. Set yourself some time goals, and try your hardest to reach them before your personal deadline. Also, put work before pleasure. A night of drinking with friends may sound fun, but knowing your up to date with your work (and that you won't have professors breathing down your neck) is far better. Trust me. Anyway, I hope this helped! Good luck with your project!

Have been through that phase in life. Try making each project interesting by giving real life examples and scenarios. IT project reports and documentation generally tend to be boring, especially so, if you are in London and stuck with the gloomy weather for days together. But good thing about IT projects is that you can always relate to some real life scenarios and its fun that way. You will get to appreciate the larger picture and how your IT systems fit in with a business model. Also, try organising some fun outings for project discussions with the team....my experience is that IT guys get their cranky ideas from pizza and coke ;) Enjoy your projects.... Cheers, Harsha harsha7kp@yahoo.com PS: mail me some snippets about your project and probably I can help.

Yes - the field you have chosen is right. Do the things you love and leave the rest to the God! (a) Breath Gis. Walk Gis. Dream Gis. you will grow naturally. Once you love it, you will have more interests in it and everything will follow naturally. (b) Try using these free-GIS tools to get used to the terms and etc http://freegis.org/ The type of software you will need to learn perhaps is better determined when you are in GIS college. You will definitely need to learn ESRI as this software is used by major GIS companies. Also learn to use IDRISI. Don't worry if you do not have the budget now, just check out the free software listed above. That should get you used to some features of GIS software. By the time you have some sort of degree, you will already have had a chance to work with these software which would be offered in your University, etc. (c) You should read not only GIS books but also maths and science books as they too are related to your subject. Here are some good books to start reading now GIS.. c1. An Introduction to Geographical Information Systems, and also the "Thinking About GIS by Roger Tomlinson" c2. How maps works c3. Principles of Geographic Information Systems by P.A. Burrough c4. Introduction to Physical Geography and the Environment by Joseph Holden c5. GIS Fundamentals by P.A. Burrough There is no rule to which books you should read. You could pick any books that is related to your subject until your university/college tells you to read specific books as part of their curriculum program. You might also enjoy reading GIS magazines, try the magazine Geoinformatics. You could also consider magazine printed in your own country as a good economical option. (d) Yes you do (e) Yes, there are lots of jobs in this field. But be good at it, there will be lots of jobs as well as lots of candidates!!

How's the Master of Liberal Arts in Information Technology from Harvard Extension School

How's the Master of Liberal Arts in Information Technology from Harvard Extension School?
I need some information and feedback on Master of Liberal Arts in Information Technology from Harvard University Extension School. Any insights on the overall experience, does the text Master of Liberal Arts in Extension studies with concentration in Information Technology viewed by HR and prospective employers? How does that compare with other continuing schools and programs around Boston like the Brandeis University MS in IT Management and the Boston University's M.S in Computer Information Systems. ALM in IT from Harvard Extension School vs MS in IT and M.S in CIS, the name Harvard is indeed something to recon with but not the text on the diploma. Any insights on this?

Boston-area employers don't view an HES degree as the same as a Harvard degree. If the only reason why you're looking at this program is because of the Harvard name, then look elsewhere. In addition, a master in liberal arts... I'm not loving that type of degree re: employment prospects. It's not the same as a masters in IT, a masters in CIS, etc. It's less focused. Employers in your field prefer the focus. BU has a very good rep in the IT field. Brandeis does as well. I also know that Northeastern and WPI (which has a campus on 128) both have respected masters IT-related degrees.
